Sometimes, the terms of this certificate are interchangeable. For example, states may refer to teachers’ credentials as certificates. However, BLS will define them as licenses because they are issued by the state government and are legally required for many teaching jobs.
In which profession are workers with these certifications?
According to the BLS Current Population Survey, about 26 percent of employed people in the United States had licenses or certificates in the top 20. As chart 1 shows, employees with advanced degrees were more likely to be licensed or certified. Occupations in the highest percentage of licensed employees include healthcare, legal and protective services, community and social services and personal care and services
Health care. Almost three-quarters of the 1.5 million workers in the healthcare practitioners and technical professions were licensed in 28, including physicians, pharmacists, and dental hygienists.
